Going Fishing

Hi Mrs Amri's class!

As I told you yesterday, I went fishing this morning.
I was very successful and caught a BIG plaice.

Plaices live on the sea ground. Often they just lie flat on the sand.
If they are afraid of something, they carve themselves into the sand a little bit.

Watch, how they are swimming!

At Langeoog they live beyond the sand banks, but sometimes they hide in the tidal channel near the beach. In summer people go there and walk along this channel. If they are lucky, they step onto one of them. Then they just keep standing there, bow down and - catch a plaice by hand!

I had mine for supper today.

  3. I like the look of those fish. Can you see them in Oregon? And how can they swim if they are flat? And I like the picture with the fish on the plate.

  4. There is a fish named "rock sole" at the pacific coast of North America. This is a very near relative to the plaice.

When they start their live as a larvae, they aren' flat but look like every other young fish. But when they grow older, their shape changes, eyes and mouth change their position and they become flat.
You ask how they can swim - they just swim like any other fish, but as a fish lying on his side. Watch this in the video. Just imagine, back is not "up" but right side of the fish and the white belly the left side. Then you can recognize their movings along their "backbone". You could ask Mrs Amri to have a rock sole for dinner, so she could bring you the bones for you to examine!
